 Back to School and
Healthy! Food
City and El Rio Hosted Four FREE Back-to-School
Immunization Clinics.
Over 1500 Children
Immunized in Four Days!
"The in-store
immunization clinics were an overwhelming success and it
was very rewarding to see families arrive with their
children as they prepared for back to school days",
notes Arnold Arvizu, Food City's Southern Division
Supervisor who estimates over 5000 people were drawn to
Food City by the immunization clinics that also offered
most children back to school supplies donated by World
Care. Back packs from Coca-Cola were given to the
first 100 children at each event and many of Food City's
vendors provided free samples to families waiting in
line.
"El Rio is thrilled to be working in
partnership with Food City once again to help families
immunize their kids," says Brenda Goldsmith, El Rio
Health Center Foundation Executive Director.
This
summer, El Rio staff provided 3,551 vaccines to more
than 1,500 children at Food City stores throughout the
city! That's a 173% increase over last
year!
"Many people have very limited resources
for transportation and are often working multiple
jobs. It's imperative that we offer options that
are convenient, in the areas that families are familiar
with, so that issues like transportation and time do not
become barriers," notes Goldsmith.
Childhood immunizations are
critical for lifelong health and the prevention of
disease. In addition, immunizations are required
for school enrollment. It is easy for parents of
school age children to forget until the school nurse
notifies them. By then it's too late, and children
are kept out of school until compliant.
Many thanks to Food City, Coca Cola,
World Care, Cardinals Charities and the H.S. Lopez
Family Foundation for their support of this lifesaving
program.

 Breast Cancer
Screening Saves Lives American Cancer Society Awards over $70,000 in
Funding to El Rio's New Tucson Breast Health
Program
Pima County has the
highest breast cancer incidence rate and the fifth
highest breast cancer mortality rate in Arizona.
That's why El Rio is launching a new breast health
program, designed to ensure that more Latina women are
able to access life-saving early detection and treatment
for breast cancer, the second leading cause of cancer
death in women.
Funding for the program comes
from the American Cancer Society, which awarded $70,684
to El Rio to increase funds for breast cancer screening
for underserved women.
"It's the American Cancer
Society's goal to ensure that every woman has access to
life saving breast cancer screening. That is why this
year, the American Cancer Society is devoting the
dollars raised through our Making Strides Against Breast
Cancer to increasing breast cancer screenings
among the underserved," said Denis Cournoyer, District
Executive Director for the American Cancer Society for
Southern Arizona.
American Cancer Society
funding will target over 300 women for mammography
screening in the program's first
year.
"We
are thrilled to have the opportunity to execute such an
important service to the community", says Kathy Byrne,
El Rio's Executive Director. "We are poised to
help educate the Latina community and to offer a medical
home to the underserved".
American Cancer
Society Funding comes through "Making Strides Against
Breast Cancer", a 5K non-competitive walk to raise
awareness and funds to fight breast cancer. Tucson will
celebrate its sixth annual walk this year with a
kick-off breakfast on August 14 and the walk on October
26 at Rillito Downs. Since 1993, 3.5 million
walkers have raised more than $230 million through
Making Strides. In 2006 alone, 450,000 walkers across
the country collected more than $40 million to help
fight breast cancer.
The American Cancer
Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary
health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a
major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives,
and diminishing suffering from cancer through research,
education, advocacy, and service. For more information,
call 1-800-ACS-2345 or visit www.cancer.org 24 hours a day, seven
days a week.

Tucson Breast Health Program, call El Rio at

El
Rio's Quick Tip for Wellness Tips
for Early Detection of Breast Cancer
The
key to curing breast cancer is early detection and
prompt treatment.
- See your health care provider for regular breast
exams at least every three years if you are between
ages 20-40 years, and every year after the age of 40.
- Get a regular mammograph as recommended.
- Practice breast
self-examination monthly. Ask your health care
provider to teach you the proper method. There is an
illustrated BSE guide available, and your local office
of the American Cancer Society also can provide
how-to-do diagrams. Remember, most breast lumps are
not cancer, but only a physician can make a proper
diagnosis.
