Birth & Women's Health Center, an El Rio Clinic, Feted with parade
Tears came to a few eyes last Thursday during the opening ceremonies of the American Association of Birth Center's Second Annual Birth Institute conference. Those in attendance watched children parade into the Grand Ballroom at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, 7000 N. Resort Drive, while a mariachi band from Davis Bilingual Elementary Magnet School played onstage. The children, all born at the Birth and Women's Health Center at 2595 N. Wyatt Drive, helped open the conference, which featured educational sessions on women's health and childbirth.

El Rio Gets $70,000 Grant to Fight Breast Cancer
A $70,000 grant from the American Cancer Society will be used to launch the El Rio Community Health Center's new breast health program targeting Hispanic women living within the Tucson Unified School District. El Rio's goal is to increase the number of underserved, uninsured Hispanic women over 40 who receive annual mammography screenings.

'Voice of El Rio' Hangs Up the Phone
advertisementA longtime nurse known as the "voice of El Rio" retired this year from El Rio Community Health Center, leaving with decades' worth of good memories. "I'm going to miss my job - period," Ramona "Mona" Engstrom said three days into her retirement. She was a receptionist at El Rio Congress Clinic, 839 W. Congress St. Engstrom, 70, has had a job since age 15, so she's still getting used to not having to wake up and go to work.

El Rio joins trend - medical records going digital
More than 70,000 additional patients in Tucson will have their medical records electronically connected to a regional network this year. UnitedHealthcare of Arizona announced a $200,000 grant to El Rio Community Health Center to help pay for the cost of an electronic medical records system. The grant will help El Rio make a leap into the future that few small medical practices can afford to take. Using the donation and $460,000 of its own, El Rio will connect its system to the Southern Arizona Health Information Exchange, a record locator service for the region, said El Rio executive director Kathy Byrne.

El Rio Gets $250,000 for Pharmacist Program
They went looking for something that actually "transforms lives" - that truly improves the health and well-being of real people - and they found it.
And so, the largest gift ever made to the foundation supporting El Rio Community Health Center - $250,000 - will give a tremendous boost to a small but nationally acclaimed project that puts people struggling with diabetes in the expert hands of pharmacists specially trained and equipped to help them.
